The importance of passion and spirituality

As we are approaching the end of the Cegep semester, I wanted to talk about some of my doubts. Do you sometimes feel like the best thing to do would be to abandon everything? Do you occasionally feel panicked about your future? How do you manage it all?

What is passion and spirituality? Spirituality, often defined as a religious system, is actually a natural function of human life. It is independent of beliefs, religion or dogmas. It consists in recognizing the existence of our true “self”, of our essence, and learning how to let it guide us. It’s the discovery of another dimension within ourselves, a luminous, powerful and grandiose part, just waiting to be explored. The more we connect to it, the more our inner state will be characterized by joy and freedom. There are two very effective techniques for this exploration: observing our feelings and meditation.

Passion, on the other hand, is defined as a strong inclination toward an activity that people like, that they find important, and in which they invest time and energy (Vallerand et al., 2003, Vallerand, 2008, 2010, 2015). This exciting activity is also used to define the individual because it occupies a position of choice within the individual’s identity. Someone who is passionate about dance or music will not say that he likes dancing or that he likes music; he will consider himself a “dancer” or a “musician”.

I think passions and spirituality play a very important role in our well-being, our self-confidence, our freedom and our personality. On one hand, passion, when it is harmonious, provides a motivational force that leads us to invest time and energy in something we love. That’s the first thing I feel when thinking about a hike or a photo shoot, for example: there are no limits and I have all the motivation needed to carry out my project.

Spirituality, on the other hand, leads to us compassion and unconditional love. It can be experienced by all through meditation, prayer, contemplative self-seeking, love and compassion, the intellectual pursuit for the meaning of life and through selfless service. With these practices, we begin to realize that consciousness is like an infinite field of possibilities; that it is omnipresent, omnipotent, omniscient and creative! We then realize that within us lies the strength we need to realize all our projects.
